Amerikanska Gymnasiet was founded in 2015 with a focus on the best interest of the students to prepare them for a rapidly changing international job market. A Digital Standard for All Schools
During 2021 and 2022, the school faced an expansive period with the construction of two new schools in Sweden, one in Uppsala and one in Halmstad. They wanted to go with the same provider for all schools to create a whole. They wished for a partner to work closely with to design the right solutions concerning the network structure. The expansion has since continued, and during 2023 and 2024, they are increasing several schools in total area while the work for the new school in Karlastaden in Gothenburg is expected to be completed.
Challenge with Many Connected Devices
Amerikanska Gymnasiet has previously faced major challenges regarding connected devices. Together with the school, our task was to provide them with a good network that can handle the number of connected devices. This is done in a secure way for students and staff. To make the schools safe places, we equip them with security cameras. A modern school environment that is also completely digital in its work methods requires a stable and secure WiFi connection. With distance learning and a shared environment between physical lessons and online, high speed and stable connection are required.
Central Administration
Amerikanska Gymnasiet chose to purchase network as a service at all its schools with central administration. With this solution, they have the ability to see all incoming components in the network in real-time, such as switches, access points, etc. It also makes it possible to easily make changes in the network, which was important for the school. For example, they can control access concerning pages and information.
Policy-Controlled Network for Extra Security
The schools have been equipped with the latest in switches where equipment can be connected to any outlet. The software in the cloud service keeps track that no unauthorized equipment is connected to the network, which reduces administration and no incorrect connections can be made at the schools since all the switches have PBA (Policy Based Automation). This means that the device (e.g., a computer) needs to be approved for connection, and if it is, it can be connected to any free port. The switches are fully self-programming by detecting which equipment is connected. With the help of this, it is possible to keep unauthorized devices out of the network.
Facing Major Expansion
Amerikanska Gymnasiet is facing a major expansion, and they plan to continue development and establishments in Sweden. With careful selection of equipment for the network and security equipment, it is smooth to expand and develop the school.
Latest Technology
To ensure that everyone at Amerikanska Gymnasiet always has access to fast and reliable Wi-Fi and network, the school has chosen a state-of-the-art solution. We have equipped our schools with the very latest in Wi-Fi technology from Cambium Networks. What is unique about our solution is that it does not need any central control units. Instead, all access points share the task of keeping the network stable and secure, which should ensure that the network is always available when you need it.
The core of our solution is Cambium Networks' intelligent switches. These switches support fast connections and provide powerful energy to the network, which is crucial for all our equipment. All this is smoothly managed through our central administration, cnMaestro, which ensures that the network at all our schools is updated and monitored.
To handle the large number of connections, we have chosen to use DrayTek's 10Gbit routers. These routers are efficient and can handle thousands of users and sessions simultaneously.
Security and Privacy in Focus
Amerikanska Gymnasiet wanted to increase its security, and this has been done through a carefully selected monitoring solution from Milesight.
The system focuses on communal areas such as corridors, dining halls, and the library. These areas are equipped with cameras adapted to spaces and needs. Dome, Bullet, and 360° cameras have been used. This ensures comprehensive monitoring while maintaining the right level of privacy as the recordings are temporarily stored on an NVR. When it is full, the oldest files are automatically deleted to free up space. To balance security needs and individual privacy, there is no live monitoring.
Only selected school staff have the authority to review the recordings, and only when necessary, for example, to confirm events. This methodology reflects Amerikanska Gymnasiet's commitment to offering a safe learning environment where both students' and staff's privacy is respected.
